We wanted to conduct case studies with our learners in order to get a better insight of the apprenticeship experience from the perspective of the people who are in training with us. We’ve had some fantastic feedback from our learners about our courses, tutors and experience with SCCU, so we would like to share it with you.
Sam was already a member of staff at Protocol, they have helped to progress his career is his chosen sector by using an apprenticeship to upskill.

Apprenticeship course and level: L4 Marketing Executive
Tell us a bit about your apprenticeship. What do you like best about it?
I really like the blend of learning. The online resources are great and I’ve already learned a great deal from them, but at the same time it is very valuable to have the one-to-one time with Kat to talk through some of the marketing concepts.
I also really enjoy that it can be tailored around my workplace, so that I can be implementing what I’m learning, day to day, and so that the tasks that I’m set to complete feel practical and not just theoretical.
How did you find your course and why did it appeal to you?
I’ve worked in marketing for a number of years, but I’ve never had the chance to pick up a formal qualification. When the opportunity to do an apprenticeship arose and to get on the ladder with my CIM I jumped at it.
If you’re trying to put yourself through the CIM it can cost thousands of pounds so to do this through my work for free was something invaluable. And even though I’ve worked in marketing before, I’m still learning a great deal about marketing that I didn’t know which is fantastic!
Why did you pick SCCU to take your apprenticeship through?
Trying to find a provider that offered marketing at level 4 was very difficult. SCCU was the only provider that I could find that offered the level 4 and wouldn’t require regular trips to London or Manchester (I work in Nottingham so that wouldn’t have been easy!)
The fact that SCCU came to our workplace and helped tailor our programme to us was fantastic!
How does your tutor support you?
Kat is brilliant – she is always there by phone or email if we need her, giving us advice or explaining things so that they relate to our business.
How are SCCU different?
SCCU was the only provider that I came across that provided the level 4 course in a way that actually worked for our business and for our schedules. The systems they use, including Bud, are all really straightforward and easy to use and it’s great to track my progress as I’m completing my apprenticeship.
How do you feel about the future? Do you feel you have a plan and have been supported by SCCU?
I feel very excited about my future in Marketing. Working towards a qualification is fantastic and I’m hoping that it will allow me to progress further in my career. I can see how the learning is already impacting on my work and I can see how it will be beneficial to my long-term marketing career as well.
What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
I would point out that apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers. I’m already quite a few years into my marketing career and I’m learning new things and gaining a qualification, supported by my workplace, that I haven’t had the chance to undertake previously.
With the levy and a supportive workplace, there is really no reason not to do an apprenticeship, especially with a provider like SCCU where the course is tailored to my business and around my time-frame.
